Here is a thing that, if there isn't a word for it, there should be:

You sing the wrong line in a song - you notice your mistake - reorient yourself and sing the line that should come next correctly - except, right before the end of that line, you notice that it is supposed to rhyme but it's not going to - solution: you leave off the last word in the line, or trail off inaudibly.

Jerry does this so often, there ought to be a name for it. These little linguistic rescue maneuvers actually take some skill and presence of mind. I start to wondered if it wouldn't actually have been easier to just learn the words!

Other strategies Jerry (and Bob) used to "rescue" lyrics that jumped the rails? We should compile them - sometimes they were ingenious.

Repeat a verse
Mumble
Pretend nothing happened
etc.

Weird.

I just noticed Option 1 yesterday listening to TDIH, '78, Scarlet Begonias.
Never really caught it before.

'She had rings on her fingers and (Jerry spaces)....
I knew without askin' she was into the (consciously leaves last word off).'

I can't tell you the date of the show, 90% sure it was pre-76. Regardless, my fave lyric flub was a Jack Straw. I'll call it the "verse reverse"...
Jerry starts with "Gotta go to Tulsa" and just goes with it and sings the whole verse>
Bob is like- OK, I got this... and starts with "Ain't a place" (the true follow up to what Jerry sang) but flubs the words>
Jerry does "I just jumped the watchman" for the second part of the song. It actually worked very well...

LOL. Sort of a postmodern Jack Straw with the story told backwards

Bob did a lot of just making noise until the words came to him. I love the Cow Palace (Dick's Picks) Playin' where he sings "Blub bah look for answers, others look for fights"

You forgot the best option: Let Jerry take an extra solo. See this Casey Jones as a prime example.

Just Poking My Head Up After A Couple Of Years, And I Realise It's Not A Lyric Flub, But How About The Bertha From August 5th '71 With An Opening Solo, Due To A Problem With The Mikes, One Of my Favourite Bertha's, And A Top AUD To Boot

apologies for the caps on every word, been putting stuff on i-tunes!

Most definitely the best option :)

That Casey is finely jammed!

Then there was the "let Donna wail over it" option.
If I'm not mistaken, Donna never forgot the words, gotta give her credit.

Here's a High Time I heard last night. They go through the intro once and just as you are expecting Jerry to start the first verse, he is not ready so they go through a whole instrumental verse. Definitely the better option than butchering a verse...

The Cassidy > UJG > Cassidy is nothin' to sneeze at either

Definitely have heard both Jerry and Bob mumble/scat sing through half a verse before...

I've heard Jerry basically repeat the same word instead of finding a new one
